[Shopify] Increase your sales! What effect does adding to favorites have?

"Favorite registration" is a common feature on EC sites, but what kind of contribution does it make to sales? Have you thought about it specifically?

It's convenient to have, and I think it's something we all take for granted as users, but I think surprisingly few people have really thought about what benefits it has from the perspective of an e-commerce business owner.

In this blog, I would like to delve a little deeper into the specific effects that can be achieved.

table of contents

First, let's consider the purpose of registering favorites from both the user's and business's perspectives.

Benefits for users

Product comparison and consideration

For example, if you use Mercari, favorite registration is often implemented as a "Like" button.

The moment you press "Like," you're not yet buying it, right? In other words, you're not pressing "Like" in order to buy it. You're pressing "Like" to make it a candidate for purchase .

In other words, at this stage, you are not yet in a psychological state that will lead you to purchase, but rather you are in a state of "maybe I will buy?"

This also saves you the trouble of having to search the next time you visit the same site, so I think there is also an element of wanting to save time!

If they are interested in buying the product, they won't just press "like", they will go ahead and "add to cart" or "purchase", so the benefit to users is usually that it makes it easier to compare and consider, right?

It's great for users to easily compare products.

I want to get information about a specific product

This is probably not a common psychology when it comes to single items such as those on Mercari, but it is the psychology that comes into play when you get information about a sale or a good deal and think, "I want to buy it then and there! "

Rather than comparing, they are just "considering", but if there is a better offer, I'll buy it.

I want to know the stock status

  • The item I wanted was out of stock...
  • I want to buy it but I don't have the money right now... but I want to buy it...

When I'm in this kind of mental state, I'm really concerned about the stock situation. In the former case , I don't want to miss the timing of restocking , and in the latter case, I really want to buy it, but I don't have the money. But I still want it. I'll be sad if it sells out!! That's the kind of mental state I'm in.

By registering a product as a favorite, you can keep track of the trends of that product, right? (There are actually a lot of services like that, aren't there?) So, you will register the product as a favorite.

Personalized experiences

This is not something that users would knowingly do, but by adding an item to their favorites, a specific algorithm is activated and the function displays other related products, asking "Would you also be interested in this?"

Some users will be surprised by this and think, "Huh? There's this too?", which will create fun and exciting times for users to enjoy the site.

Spending more time looking at something also leads to exciting creativity on the user's part!

Easy to make repeat purchases

This is an effective method if you have already purchased the product. It would be a pain to visit the site every time you want to find it.

If you have registered a product as a favorite, you can visit the site and press the "Favorite" button to quickly find the product you want again.

Actually, I buy the same protein all the time, so I add it to my favorites and buy it quickly, which is very convenient.

I've listed a few here, but I think most people can understand this psychology.

It is important for business operators to consider this psychology and how they can use it to increase sales, so next let's consider the benefits for business operators.

Benefits for businesses

Increase repeat visit rate

In more complicated terms, it could be called "improving customer engagement." Basically, one of the benefits is that it increases the chances of customers coming back again .

One of the benefits for users is the ability to "compare and consider products," so naturally when comparing, they will be going back and forth between their own product and their rivals' products!

Comparisons are inevitable , so it's important to have customers visit multiple times.

The deciding factor is who will buy from those who visit repeatedly, but if your site is difficult to revisit at this stage, it may be eliminated from comparison.

It is very important to make the site easy to compare, as this is extremely important from a usability standpoint.

It can be used to increase the length of stay and the number of visits! This is a huge benefit.

Data collection and analysis

Analysis is very important. For example,

  • A Favorite registration is "100" Actual sales are "10"
  • B Favorite registrations: "50" Actual sales: "8"

Let's say there is a product like this!

In this case, if we look at the number of favorites alone, "A" is more popular, but "B" has a higher sales rate!

In other words, the product that should be grown is "B," but if you don't make that comparison, you will end up thinking that "A" is the popular product because it has sold in large numbers and has a large number of registrations.

Since "B" has a higher sales rate, if you change the way "B" is presented in a way that increases the number of people adding "B" to their favorites, then sales are likely to increase, right?

Being able to analyze these kinds of things is a very important strategic part of using the "Add to Favorites" feature.

Improved customer experience

When users have a special experience, they are more likely to make a purchase.

Naturally, this links back to the benefits for users, but if you are notified that there is low stock remaining, you may of course be in a hurry to buy, but another emotion you may feel is, "They should have told me before it was gone!"

I think the psychology behind this varies from person to person, but in any case, it shouldn't be a negative factor.

It may also be possible to send out customized information for registered products. It's like giving that extra push to give people that "want to buy."

People who are thinking, "I really want it," are also in a state where they want to make excuses to themselves, so that's where you need that final push!

Favorite registration serves as a starting point for considering various such measures, and offers many benefits not only to users but also to businesses.

summary

By focusing on the "favorite registration" function from both the user's and business's perspectives, I believe we have been able to confirm the benefits of both, although this is not an exhaustive list.

Basically, this is a tool that creates a "WIN x WIN" situation, so it's a feature that's well worth having.

There aren't many drawbacks though...

I don't think there are many disadvantages, but there are cases where it's not even necessary.

This is the case for shops that only sell one product !

In this case, I don't think users are going to want to add the item to their favorites. However, they may not want the item to run out of stock, so in that case, it would be better to use a "notification" app rather than a "favorite" app.

It's important to note that some apps allow you to receive notifications via email, and some allow you to receive notifications via push or LINE, so favorites are not a panacea in all cases.

Also, when adding the favorites feature to Shopify, you will always need to use an app, but there are so many apps available, from well-known to lesser known, that it can be hard to decide which one to install. I have written an article like this before, so please take a look at it.

[Shopify] Comparison of the 4 most popular apps for registering favorites

We introduce four popular "favorite registration" apps for Shopify and write about their benefits.

E-commerce sites require a lot of work to be done daily, using various methods to sell products and updating the site every day to think about how to sell them.

One of the ways to do this is to "add to favorites," so remember that it's a pretty effective method!
